Traveling to Jamaica from Europe: Connecting flights

posted by Focused on December 19, 2010 @ 2:00 am in TRAVEL EXPERIENCE

Traveling to Jamaica from Europe can be a hectic process. Depending on your point of departure, you might have to take more than one flight (unless you fly on a charter flight). Catching a connecting flight can be a very big hassle, especially when you have to do so in one of the biggest and busiest airports in the world. I recently traveled to Jamaica from Geneva, Switzerland. My itinerary included flying from Geneva to London Heathrow to catch a flight heading to Miami.

The plane from Geneva landed at Heathrow’s terminal 5 and my connecting flight was leaving from terminal 3. While the shuttle service between Terminal 5 and terminal 3 was fluid, getting to my gate was something else. It was located at the other end of the terminal, which meant that we had to walk for approximately a kilometer. Covering such a distance under normal circumstances is no big deal but doing so while carrying hand luggage and being pressed for time is more challenging. I managed to reach my gate on time.

Having traveled this journey on numerous occasions, there was no surprise element when dealing with the hassle of flight connections. A person who has never traveled from Europe to Jamaica can benefit from a few tips:

Spread your connections

Giving yourself enough time to catch a connecting flight is of great importance. You don’t necessarily know what the distance between your landing door and next departure gate will be. Security checks can slow you down considerably. Also, the first flight of your journey can run late and jeopardize the possibility of making your intended connection. When booking your ticket, widening the gap between your arrival and departure times (at your connecting port) will save you stress.

Eat well before you leave

Europe-Jamaica itineraries are such that you can sometimes find yourself on the road for 24 hours. The quality of food on airplanes is a gamble, you don’t know whether it will fill you or not.
