The 2008 Beijing Olympics will forever be remembered with pride by Jamaicans around the world. Jamaica's sprinters displayed an unprecedented dominance in their events and conquered the hearts of sports fans worldwide. Usain Bolt was the athlete of the Games and it looks as though he will dominate world sprinting in a way that we have never seen. How did our athletes achieve this remarkable feat?
1) Through discipline and hard work. One does not become a gold medalist by being passive and waiting for the wind to blow success one's way. World-class sprinters train for several hours a day throughout most the year. It is rare to see a top level sprinter take more than a month off per year.
2) The guidance of dedicated coaches. Even the most talented athletes need a good coach to maximize their potential. Track coaches analyze every aspect of their athletes' mechanics. They leave no stones unturned as far as that is concerned. Sprint coaches possess a desire for precision that is only rivaled by Swiss watch engineers.
3) A positive state of mind. The best athletes never stop believing in themselves. Self-motivation and belief is key. One cannot afford to fear the unknown if one wants to break records.
It is important for sports to be included in the list of nation-building tools. Among the messages that Beijing 2008 highlighted are the value of hard work, the importance of mentorship, attention to detail and maintaining a positive attitude.
Much has been said about the basic facilities in which the Jamaican athletes train. They achieved so much with so 'little'. One must commend them (athletes and coaches) for their drive and efficiency.
A good way to build upon Jamaica's success in Beijing would be to include track coaches and athletes in most productivity seminars held in Jamaica. Who is better placed to give lessons in efficiency at the moment?
