Jamaican basketball received some good news at the 2010 NBA (National Basketball Association) Draft. Kingston-born and past Jamaica College student Jerome Jordan was drafted by the Milwaukee bucks. Standing at 7”1 and weighing 244 lbs, Jordan plays at the center position. Having learned the game at the relatively late age of 17, his progression curve is huge.
Jordan will be plying his trade in New York City as the Milwaukee Bucks are expected to trade him to the New York Knicks within the next week. Should this move be completed, Jerome Jordan would be following the footsteps of another Jamaican 7 footer: NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing. Ewing became a Knicks legend while playing in New York for 15 seasons.
Basketball is an often-overlooked and underfunded sport in Jamaica. Jerome Jordan’s being drafted by an NBA team should help raise awareness about the fact that there are lots of talented basketball players in Jamaica.
