Isn't it called the WORLD Cup for a reason?

posted by Focused on December 4, 2010 @ 12:24 pm in SPORTS

World football governing body FIFA’s decision to award the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar, respectively, has triggered very emotional reactions from people around the world. You just have to visit any major news website to see the reactions for yourself. I am not writing to discuss FIFA’s long-standing reputation for being a corrupt organization (I see corruption as one of the worst problems perpetuated by man) or whether Russia and Qatar deserved their victories in the context of the recent bribery allegations revealed by the BBC. I am writing this post because I find something mind-boggling : The fact that so many people still don’t realize that the world exists beyond Western Europe and the United States.

Many people in Western Europe (especially in the UK) complained that they will now have to wait until at least 2026 for their next chance of hosting a World Cup. Yes, I can see that this is a long time for any stadium-going football enthusiast and it would be very convenient for some if the World Cup were always hosted in their own neck of the woods. However, one must remember an important piece of reality : The World Cup is a world event and some parts of the world such as Eastern Europe and the Middle East have never had a chance to host one. Aren’t they a part of this world too? Of the 19 World Cups to have taken place to date, 10 were held in Western Europe, 4 in South America, 2 in Latin America, 1 in North America, 1 in Asia and 1 in Africa. The world is a big place and some are only finding this out now.

What’s your view ?
