Where is the love?

posted by Focused on December 10, 2010 @ 8:08 pm in SOCIETY

Do you know of any head of state who has listed the notion of love as a priority in the development or strengthening of his or her nation? If you do, please let me know. Whether looking at an industrialized country or a developing one, I have yet to see an elected president, prime minister or chancellor cite a love-based society as the country’s main goal. The economy is the typically prioritized item. Nobody can argue about the importance of a strong economy for a nation. However, an economy will not reach the highest level of prosperity possible without love being put at the forefront of things. Human beings need love, it is at the core of every person. We are creatures of feeling and love is our fundamental feeling. Without it we are weak. There are various degrees of love. Which one am I referring to ?

I am talking about the most basic type of love that a person can have for another human being : a place in one’s heart that respects and cares for someone’s wellbeing without having to know the person. One can’t be everybody’s friend nor can one be in love with everybody. However, there is a love that connects all human beings on this planet. It sometime manifests itself in tragic times such as when a country thousands of miles away is hit by a natural disaster. The outpour of donations to victims of an earthquake or flood is an example of this. People are called into that same part of their heart that allows them to empathize with fellow human beings, regardless of the fact that the disaster victims are perfect strangers. In the aftermath of the disaster, people spared by the event are able to see themselves in other human beings (the disaster victims in this case). Where am I going with this?

In my opinion, human beings are capable of reaching into that same part of their heart on a daily basis. No, I am not talking about making donations everyday. Not at all. I am referring to an individual’s feeling of being connected to humanity. One just has to look deep within oneself to feel it. Why is this so important?

When one has enough love in one’s heart, one will no longer tolerate violence against other human beings. When one has enough love in one’s heart, one will not allow anyone to sabotage anybody’s constructive endeavor. When one has enough love in one’s heart, one will never cease to encourage others to go ahead with their ventures. Do you get the point? When there is love, there is respect. Love is necessary for solidarity. When there is love, ‘divide and conquer’ tactics don’t work. When there is love, there is peace. Don't these elements sound like ingredients for prosperity? We must always remember that mankind makes the economy. Human capital is society’s most important resource. When man is strong, the economy will follow.

When a society reaches such a widespread level of collective consciousness, it will be unshakeable. This might sound too idealistic to some of you. It is not. It is a matter of survival.
