One woman's spirit: Many lives touched

posted by Focused on October 28, 2009 @ 1:57 pm in SOCIETY

Ida Northover, better known as Ms Gene to her friends, is an active member of her community. She lives in Thompson Pen, St Catherine. She has played a pivotal role in enlightening her fellow residents about HIV contamination. By volunteering to be the local representative for Jamaica’s National Aids Program, Ms Gene has managed to have a positive impact on the wellbeing of HIV-positive Thompson Pen residents.

Similar to many communities around the world, attitudes towards HIV-positive people in Thompson Pen frequently revolved around disdain and exclusion.  Ignorance on the subject was the root of all this.  With the creation of information sessions and support groups for people diagnosed with HIV, Thompson Pen residents were able to let go of the myths surrounding HIV. It is no longer seen as a death sentence to those who have it. Those who are HIV-negative now know that simply being around someone who has the virus is not a contamination risk.

Ms Gene’s story is a powerful example of how a single person can have a significant impact on an entire community. In her case, it applies to HIV awareness but the principle can be applied to anything else.  Any initiative, no matter how small it may seem, can have a huge impact.
