Improving society: No future without the present

posted by Focused on May 31, 2010 @ 7:50 am in SOCIETY

Events that cause people to reflect on the state of society (Including the recent security force operations in West Kingston) often elicit the clichéd but true statement that “children are the future”. Children represent the future of our nation, planet and overall species as human beings. It is our job as adults to make sure that our youth inherits a better world than the one we live in. While this is clear to many in theory, the question as to whether adults practice what they preach or not is a different story. Too many people forget that there is no future without the present.

What is the present? People who have the most influence on the direction in which society goes today: the adults (young and old). Us! Adults need to hang on to their ideals and act accordingly. When children see us attempting to improve society’s condition, they will naturally do it when they grow up. We all have our civic duties, including children. It’s just that we, as adults, are the guides responsible for any initiative.

The “children are the future” motto has become a socially acceptable cop-out for some. It is another way for adults to justify their fear of acting today. Children learn from the behavior displayed by adults. Early childhood initiatives are important at all levels of society but they can’t stand on their own. In terms of nation building, if we do not make courageous decisions now our children will inherit a bigger social nightmare that nobody deserves.

What are your ideals? Whatever they are, keep them alive. Burying them would result in burying the children.

To be continued…
