Today’s edition of the Gleaner highlights the amazing story of 20-year-old Mesha-Gay McKenzie. She started teaching her then-six-month-old daughter how to read with the aid of a DVD, flash cards and books. Many people laughed at her initially but McKenzie’s daughter, now 2 years old, can read. She could already recognize words at the age of 9 months.
Mesha-Gay McKenzie’s story is very inspiring. Her desire to give her child a head-start in life (via education) led her to try in an innovative method of teaching. She didn’t listen to those who doubted her ability to teach her child how to read at such a young age. More importantly, Mesha-Gay McKenzie’s success shows that it doesn’t take much to teach a child how to read. A teacher who believes that a child can learn will get that child to learn.
