Media around the world gave Jamaican athletics a lot of attention over the past two summers. One can argue, however, that the male athletes received a lot more media coverage than their female counterparts. This came despite the fact that Shelly-Ann Fraser won the Olympic and World 100 meter finals in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Veronica Campbell-Brown also won the 200 meter final at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Although no world records were broken in the races won by Jamaican female athletes, their performance still deserved more attention.
American public television channel, Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), recently broadcast a feature on Jamaican female athletes. It is a behind-the-scenes look at Jamaican girls' training regime. Will Jamaican female sprinters finally start to receive the type of media attention they deserve?
