What's wrong with precaution?

posted by Focused on December 6, 2010 @ 9:17 am in CULTURE

What is wrong with moving in with your partner before getting married? Absolutely nothing, if you ask me. I think that it is a necessary step to be taken by those considering marriage. It allows people to know the sides of their partner that cannot be found out when one does not live with him or her. Surprisingly, living with your partner without being married is frequently frowned upon in Jamaican culture. This is ironic as wisdom is an integral part of Jamaican culture.

Doesn’t the old “see mi and come live wid mi ah two different ting” proverb ring a bell? Doesn’t it apply to all aspects of life? I don’t understand why it is conveniently left out of the equation when it comes to the issue of marriage. It is often recommended to go for a test drive when one buys a car. It is considered normal to go for a trial period when one thinks of choosing a cable TV provider. Those moves are accepted as precautionary behavior. The consequences of buying the wrong car or getting the wrong cable TV package pale in comparison to the ones one can suffer when choosing to have a long and indefinitely close association with the wrong person. So why is it such a big deal when one applies the same principle of precaution to a potential spouse? The people we keep close to us can have a much more serious impact on our wellbeing than any other elements of life. Why set oneself up for a potential period of prolonged stress? Can you think of a reason?

This contradiction in our culture is not doing us any good. Compatibility between individuals is a reality. Anything that makes one see clearer should not be vilified. Prevention is better than cure.

To be continued…
