5 advantages of having a small country

posted by Focused on October 25, 2010 @ 1:35 pm in BUSINESS

“Bigger is better” is often the motto of choice when talking about a country’s economic potential. A large land mass and a growing population are features that are usually considered appealing by businesspeople who want to invest in a country. However, being a small country has its shares of overlooked advantages.

1. Logistics efficiency

With proper infrastructure such as quality roads and an extensive highway network, goods can be transported from one end of the country to the other very quickly. Time saved often equates to money saved.

2. Businesspeople can connect with various business communities

The fact that a country is small implies that its major cities and markets are not that far away from each other. Businesspeope can attend more business conferences in the same day. This increases networking possibilities and, inevitably, the possibility of deals being signed. More deals being cut equals more money being generated.

3. An opportunity to have a great public transport system

Many countries dream of having a convenient public transit system. Having a small country increases the possibility of that dream becoming a reality. With proper planning, even the smallest village within a country can be served by a railway network. Switzerland’s railway system is a perfect example of that. In Switzerland, one can hop on a train and come off at a train station that is close enough to the most remote parts of the country.

4. Makes business relocation (within the country) less problematic

The concept of a business relocating its offices to another part of a country is nothing new. For employees, this is never an easy task as it often involves moving to a new community and leaving one’s current community behind. When employees have children such a move is even more problematic given the fact that they have to find new schools and daycares for them. Living in a small country alleviates this burden as commuting is more of an option. Parents can commute to their workplace’s new location without having to uproot their kids in the middle of the school year.

5. The ability to enjoy a geographical diversity without traveling too far

An occasional change in scenery can do wonders for a person’s wellbeing. Being able to escape the stress of an urban environment and be in a more peaceful one (such as the mountains, countryside or the beach) in a relatively short space of time is priceless and rare.

How does this relate to Jamaica? The Island’s small size (11,100 square kilometers) gives it all the aforementioned advantages. However, Jamaica must address the issues related to the state of its roads. Given the fact that road congestion is a major issue, the authorities need to implement measures that will give people an incentive to use public transportation or carpool more often. Traffic jams cost time and, as you know, time is worth more than money. What do you think?
