In a time when dancehall music frequently makes the headlines for the wrong reasons, artiste Konshens’ song, “The realest song”, comes as a breath of fresh air. Not only is it uplifting but it sheds a bright light on a reality overlooked by today’s music: Jamaicans who work hard towards a better life without looking for shortcuts. Too many artistes love to use the term ‘reflection of reality’ when trying to justify their violent and disheartening lyrics. “The realest song” is a reminder that uplifting others and positivity are an integral part of ‘reality’.
More importantly, “the realest song” ’s emphasis on not being envious of others is welcome. Envy and jealousy are destructive emotions whose energy often cripples the advancement of various communities. It is important for people to know that envy and jealousy won’t get anyone anywhere in life.
The official video of the song, directed by Konshens (born G.Spence) and shot by Gareth Cobran, deserves to be praised. The picture quality is excellent! So are the shots. It doesn’t take the viewer a long time to realize that a lot of thought, attention to detail and time were invested in the video. “The realest song” can set a new standard for dancehall videos, one that will do it justice.
A product of Jamaica’s abundantly rich musical tradition, dancehall has yet to reach its full potential as an industry. Dancehall pioneers laid the groundwork decades ago. All the ingredients for success have been there for a while: Scores of talented artists, vibrant production and the following of millions of people around the world. However, dancehall can only reach the status it ought to reach if it stops sabotaging itself. Petty feuds between artistes and the abandonment of lyrical creativity will only weaken it.
As mentioned in a previous article, substance combined with style adds another dimension to music. High quality music becomes timeless. Music has a powerful impact on people. People will always want to remember music that gave them hope. The success of “The realest song” is a win-win for dancehall. Whatever the genre, music that breathes life is guaranteed to reach new heights. One should only expect life to improve if one adds positivity to it. How else can one’s life improve?
